‘Falling for’ Fridays

Just a little look into the things I’m ‘falling for’ these days… yard/garden edition!

#1: This tutorial…

how to edge flower beds like a pro, flowers, gardening, Isn t this edge pretty Trust me this is very easy to do All you need are three tools you likely already have on hand

With the addition of lots of mulch I can tell our beds are in desperate need of edging.  This tutorial makes it seem pretty easy (if only their weren’t miles of bed edges in our yard!).

#2.  This view…

Benefits of Oak Trees

We recently came into a little bit of unexpected money (doesn’t that sound shady! seewhatididthere) and Matt decided to spend it on trees for the back yard.  He really loves oak trees and since he so rarely wants things around the house I’m happy to let him pick out a couple of these beauties.  Of course ours won’t look like this guy for years (and years and years) however I am so excited about the potential for shade.  I didn’t know how much I (and my pale skin) would miss trees & shade until we bought this house.

#3:  This space…

Shady Places

better homes & gardens

Speaking of shade, isn’t this a gorgeous space?  I don’t know about the upkeep (or price) with tents but this looks amazing!

#4: This disguise…

Conceal the Air-Conditioner

better homes & gardens

Ugly outside appliances no more!  I just need to figure out the ground cover situation so it wouldn’t be an issue for Matt to mow/weed around the structure.  I’m thinking maybe crushed stone or gravel? (Secretly I wish we had artificial turf like all the Yard Crasher re-dos.  Not really… but the maintenance must be awesome).

#5:  These lights…

Mason Jar Solar Lights

garden therapy

How cool are these lights?  I think we for sure need to make some for the backyard.  With all the sunlight we get back there it would power them for ages!  Not to mention this is a pretty cheap and very easy looking project… just the kind I like.

So that’s what I’m falling for this week!  What are some of the things you’re falling for?

‘Falling for’ Fridays

Just a little look into the things I’m ‘falling for’ these days…

#1: This TV show…

Fixer Upper is our new addiction!  Chip and Joanna are such an adorable couple and I love watching them transform these old houses into gorgeous homes.  Also I want Joanna to come help me decorate my house, I LOVE her style.  And I want to hang out with them, I think we would have a lot of fun 🙂 (why is Texas so far away?  SIGH)  My favorite thing about this show is just how upbeat it is – even through the unexpected messes & problems of renovation these two keep their cool and everyone seems to genuinely love what they do.

#2.  These stripes…

aqua and white striped bathroom

I want to do this look in my laundry room.  Thick chunky aqua and white stripes.  I’m thinking of doing the entire wall behind the appliances a solid color and stripes everywhere else.

#3:  These flowers…

Limelight hydrangea

Limelight Hydrangeas are nothing new but I still love their look.  I want to put these in the long back bed we just mulched along with maybe some pale pink Knockout Roses like the ones below?

#4: This bedroom…

Master Bedroom Retreat, I Chose The Gray/Blue And Brown Colors With A Blue And Grey Bedroom Ideas For Men Or Boys Modern Furniture Design

It’s been hard to create a gender neutral bed room that both Matt and I love (okay, okay, his idea of ‘love it’ just means no pink or flowers).  The bedspread we have now is okay but I found some new bedding on clearance for our guest room and I’m contemplating switching it out with what’s currently in the master.  Our walls are already a similar grey and the spread is white with brown leaves (like the shams in this picture) so I’m thinking I can make it work.

#5:  These jars…

My friend Brooke collects these beauties.  We were over at her apartment the other night and she has them lined up on display above her kitchen cabinets.  Brooke has amazing  taste in decorating and I love her unique ideas… now I want to start my own collection!

‘Falling for’ Fridays

Just a little look into the things I’m ‘falling for’ these days…

#1: These bedroom colors…

guest room, grey/green, white, & coral

Beautiful little space

Great idea for getting the drapery length you need. combine a patterned drape with a white panel. I like that the pop of colour is on top.

(don’t know the source on these photos, both from my Pinterest house boards)

After painting one of our guest rooms I’m itching to add a little more color and furnishings.  I’m thinking lots of white to brighten up the smaller room and pops of coral… Matt says no pink in the house but surely our guests won’t mind 🙂

#2.  This recipe…

Creamy Chicken Quinoa and Broccoli Casserole...light and healthy casserole, low calorie, low fat, healthy, clean eating recipe

Creamy Chicken, Quinoa, and Broccoli Casserole from here.  We are on a quest to eat healthier and that includes ‘super foods’ like quinoa… but I get easily turned of by the strong taste.  However I have found that cooking the quinoa in chicken broth actually tones down the flavor, and this recipe is no exception.  This one isn’t as quick as I like my weekday recipes to be but is certainly worth a shot on weekends.  It’s creamy and flavorful, and makes great leftovers.

#3:  This DIY wooden sign tutorial…

lettered sign

Karah over at The Space Between shared this image transfer tutorial that she used to create this word art sign awhile back.  I recently dumpster dived  with my sis at one of the under-construction-houses in our neighborhood and picked up a lot of scrap wood.  Now I’m itching to make myself a cool sign like this!

#4: This fabric…

54'' Braemore Gazebo Cloud Drapery Fabric & Upholstery Fabric By The Yard by Braemore, http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00E5M034C/ref=cm_sw_r_pi_dp_eN4esb1ZDTFH2

It’s called ‘Gazebo Cloud’ by Braemore and it’s beautiful!  I’m determined to put this somewhere in my house but I haven’t figured out where yet.  Also it can be a little expensive so I’m waiting on a good sale to bite the bullet.

#5:  Babies and their best furry friends…

Dogs. I Love them.

(don’t know the source for this, found on Pinterest)

So sweet!  Melts my heart.  I hope my fur babies love our future kids just as much someday (and vise versa).  The golden retriever licking the baby?  That would be Chloe.  And Sophie would be the one letting the kid sleep on top of her. 🙂

‘Falling for’ Fridays

Just a little look into the things I’m ‘falling for’ these days…

#1.  Ornamental grasses…

Give your garden four seasons of interest with low-maintenance ornamental grasses. Here are some of the best varieties.

Matt and I are planning on mulching the back bed this weekend and then would come planting/landscaping.  I love the look of ornamental grasses but haven’t convinced him to join me on the bandwagon yet.  However thanks to our neighbors new privacy fence I did get the ‘ok’ to put a raised vegetable bed in our newly hidden side yard so I’ll take what I can get.

#2: This song

Seriously can’t stop playing this over and over again (luckily Matt likes it as much as I do!).  Granted the music video is a little weird but it’s an homage to Robert Palmer’s ‘Simply Irresistible‘ video and kind of a farce (read more about it here).  LOVE it!

#3:  This TV show…

It’s HGTV’s newest show Flipping the Block, about four teams who have to renovate condos while living in them… and the conditions are nasty!  The first episode was this past week and I’m hooked.  My girl Nicole Curtis from Rehab Addict is one of the judges (love her!) and it’s pretty crazy seeing what all can be done in a few days.  Plus it’s nice to have something to watch when we veg out at nights since all our regular shows are on hiatus for the summer.

#4: Sliding/Barn doors…

narrow, sliding door..

upstairs bath door ideas

We need to do something about the door on our upstairs bathroom.  It opens into the room which is pretty narrow and makes it impossible to get to the bath/toilet while to door is open.  I’m thinking a pocket door might be the way to go (if we have room in the wall) but I’m also digging the sliding/barn door look.  Trouble is our wall space is limited so it would probably have to be something custom-built but I’ve found a couple of tutorials and just might do it…. maybe :).

#5:  This printable…

Hebrews 6:19 Printable from Elegance & Enchantment and The Thinking Closet

You know I love all things sea-inspired so this anchor printable from The Thinking Closet (shared on Elegance & Enchantment) is perfect.  Also I love free art, and you can too!  Just click the link at the bottom of her post to download your own printable copy.

‘Falling for’ Fridays

Just a little look into the things I’m ‘falling for’ these days… beach edition!!!

#1: These beached tones…

Coastal and Beach Decor: Coastal Decor Color Palette - Beached Tones

We don’t have a beach house but I like to pretend we do 🙂  Doesn’t this color pallet make you sigh a little in relaxation?  Love it!

#2.  These beach paintings…

John Seba-Ocean Tide

{coastal art} shoreline

great for foyer table. Coastal Art, Abstract Ocean Painting, "Into The Fog", Grey Morning at the Sea, One bird flies down the shoreline.

sold, but by this etsy artist

I have done a number of ocean paintings myself (mostly at sunrise/set) but I’m loving the more muted colors in these pieces.

#3:  This wooden beach house sign…

You can make your own with this DIY tutorial here from My Pink Life by Aimee Weaver.   I need this in my ‘beach’ house!

#4: This beachy quote…

live in the sunshine swim in the sea quote - Google Search

I have been looking for a good sea themed quote for some time for an art project I have planned for our master bathroom.  Found it!

#5:  This beachy starfish decor…

Beach Decor White Starfish Mirror - Nautical Shell Mirror - White Starfish Seashell Mirror

Love it

Next time we head to the beach I just might have to pick up some starfish to decorate with.  I love the look!

Just a little look into the things I’m ‘falling for’ these days… July 4th style!!!

#1: This red, white, & blue cheesecake cake from Recipe Girl…

Red, White and Blue Cheesecake Cake Recipe from RecipeGirl.com

YUM… I’m a firm believer that everything is better with cheesecake!  And how cute is this twist on a 4th of July dessert?

#2.  These 4th of July printables from The Blissful Bee

Visit her site through the link above to get the full-sized versions.  I especially love the flag bunting!

#3:  This DIY clothes pin flag wreath

Simple, cheap, & cool

#4: This DIY pallet wood USA map from all things DIY

How cool is this for a big open wall space like the stairwell (we have one as well).  Just find yourself some wood to re-purpose (or buy new), add a stencil & some paint (or freehand), hang and viola!  Huge cheap art!  I could easily see this done with all kinds of images/stencils, just pick whatever works for you.

#5:  This table design from Starfish cottage

I love how simple this is, besides the flag you could easily use everything for multiple occasions.  And I might have a slight obsession with starfish 🙂

‘Falling for’ Fridays & #HELPZOE

This edition of ‘Falling for’ Fridays is dedicated to a sweet little girl named Zoe Tipping.

Matt and I belonged to Midtown Fellowship church when we lived in Columbia, SC.  We loved the family & community we had there and still miss it greatly.

A  couple of weeks ago at my sister-in-law’s wedding we ran into a friend who still attends Midtown and he told Matt of some terrible news.

Our former pastor Allen Tipping & his wife Courtney’s three-year old little girl Zoe has cancer.  Specifically Wilm’s tumor, an embryonic kidney cancer.  Zoe’s cancer is stage four and has spread to her lungs.

Read her story here.

I can’t tell you how much my heart has ached over sweet Zoe these past few weeks.  Life isn’t fair, not when a precious little girl has to suffer like this.  Not when a wonderful family who has been through so much pain has to endure so much more.  But in the same breath I am reminded that although not fair, life is a gift, and a gift we neither earn nor deserve.  As the Tippings say: “Zoe means life, and life is exactly what we are begging God for.”

Visit helpzoe.com  for more information and on how you can #helpzoe.

Just a little look into the things I’m ‘falling for’ these days…

#1: This swimming girl…

Sophie is a champion swimmer.  From the day she decided that water wasn’t scary it has been hard to keep her out of it.  And although it’s pretty unusual for Bostons to like water we always hoped Chloe would follow in Soph’s footsteps.  The first couple times we took her it seemed pretty unlikely… when put in the water it was clear she could swim but it didn’t seem that she would ever want to.  Well this week we went over to my sister’s place to try again.  She has a pond on the property where she lives and the girls love to go visit.  Sophie immediately jumped in to retrieve her swim toy and a few seconds later… plop!  Chloe got in by herself and swam around like a little otter!   It took her a few tries to grab the swim toy without drowning herself but she got the hang of it!  So proud of my baby girl! 🙂

#2.  This recipe…

I love finding recipes that are quick, easy, and delicious for a weeknight meal and this hit all three!   I served it over brown rice and also added steamed broccoli.  Matt and I couldn’t stop exclaiming how delicious this was and we both seriously looked forward to the leftovers (fatties, haha).  I found it on pinterest but the link to the original blog post can be found here.

#3:  This duvet set…

I’ve been wanting something lighter and brighter for our master bedroom and this set really caught my eye.  It is the Lombard Signature from Crane & Canopy.  I’ve never bought anything from them before but discovered them on The Happy Housie’s bedroom makeover post.  It’s the exact style that I’ve been looking for and much more reasonable than most bed sets I’ve seen.  I would love for the Lombard set to come live with me someday soon (hint hint Matt).

#4: This patio makeover…

Outdoor patio redesign: new deck on top of concrete slab

Matt and I have a boring ol’ slab of concrete that serves as our backyard patio.  Functionally it’s great, but it’s not so pretty on the eyes.  Since our house is built on a slab we really didn’t think we could do much in the way of a deck (and we’re not very builder-knowledgeable people).  When I stumbled upon this post by the View Along The Way I knew we had found our answer.  Pretty backyard deck here we come!

#5:  This face…

Puppy Enjoying a Popsicle

SERIOUSLY how cute is that?!?!  Sure, this is not my dog, nor do I have any idea whose dog this is, BUT it’s a squishy faced pup loving him some Popsicle.  I’ve had a rough week at work and sometimes you just need a fuzzy-pick-me-up.  You’re welcome 🙂
